The South Grand Chalk Walk is one day every October where people come together to make art, explore South Grand and have fun. You should come! Whether you’re a professional artist or just want to try it out, all ages and abilities are welcome. Plus, there are cash and gift card prizes in many categories. Or just stop by, enjoy fresh air and fresh art, vote for your favorite and enjoy music, performances, games and the shops and restaurants on South Grand. Head to Ritz Park to add to the community mural, too!

Join us Saturday, October 12th, 2019 for a chance for the community to come together to celebrate artistic talent, fresh air and everything that South Grand has to offer. Family friendly activities from 10am-5pm for you to enjoy as you explore the area, plus performances from local musicians and acts from 1-4pm. Stop by or stay all day as chalk art appears and evolves.

Official judges will walk from 3-4pm and cast their ballots in the age categories (changed this year!) of ages 0-6, 7-11, 12-17 and 18+.

The top 3 vote getters will win cash or gift card prizes for Community Favorite, so stop by Ritz Park (3147 S. Grand) to vote anytime 10am-4pm!

$1,000 in cash prizes for judged categories and for community favorites, plus four featured paid artists will be creating signature pieces at the edges of South Grand – don’t miss ’em.

Introducing your 2018 South Grand Chalk Walk judges. They’re professional, they’re creative, they’re Emily, Felecia and Robin!

EMILY HEMEYER

Emily Hemeyer is not only Artscope’s Program Director, but also Artist in Residence at St. Francis Cabrini Academy. Locally she heads up the Temporal Cities: Blanket Fort Festival and Wild Seed Field Museum. She’s worked as a teaching artist with numerous organizations including the Contemporary Art Museum, St Louis Art Museum, Chesterfield Arts, Metro Theater Company, and Public Art St Paul (MN). Hemeyer is a Community Arts Training Graduate and holds a BFA degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. 

FELECIA ALLMAN

Felecia Allman is an artist and event producer, from St. Louis, MO. Her love of color, animals, nature, figure drawing, the super natural and more collide into unique and bold expressions. International companies Pabst Blue Ribbon, Stag and Anheuser-Busch-owned Grant’s Farm have commissioned Felecia’s whimsical style. Her artistic skills have been utilized by local businesses, including OG Hospitality Group (The Corner Pub and Grill, Tavern STL, The Shack).

Felecia made her debut as an event producer with 2013’s Sensory Overload at Plush STL. St. Lou Fringe contracted Felecia to co-produced the first Five Fifths in 2014. The Alice in Wonderland themed event took place at The Kranzberg Arts Center. Her role as co-producer continued for two more of those galas, with varying themes and locations. The city of Maplewood, Missouri contracted Felecia as the Artist Coordinator for the 12th and 13th annual Let Them Eat Art events. Since early 2016, Felecia has coordinated artists for the many display windows at The Westgate Lofts in Midtown St. Louis. Felecia loves to connect with other creatives to learn from each other and support the artistic community.

ROBIN HIRSCH-STEINHOFF

A St. Louis native, Robin Hirsch-Steinhoff holds a BFA from Kansas City Art Institute (1985). Since 1989, she has served as Artistic Director of Art Saint Louis, a non-profit visual art organization & Gallery in downtown St. Louis. Her full-time work with Art Saint Louis includes curating & presenting juried and curated exhibitions, creating artistic opportunities and working to exhibit and promote the work of St. Louis regional artists. Since 1997, Robin has served as juror and/or awards judge for 60 local & Midwest regional art exhibitions. She served as an Artist Fellowships Grants Reader (2017) and Grants Panelist (2018) for Regional Arts Commission’s (2017), grants panelist for Missouri Arts Council (2008-2012) and has participated in numerous volunteer community activities for regional non-profit organizations including Chesterfield Arts, Circus Flora, Regional Arts Commission, and Volunteer Lawyers & Accountants for the Arts. She is past-President of the St. Louis chapter of the National Women’s Caucus for Art for which she also served as Vice President, Newsletter Writer/Editor, and Board Advisor. Robin has served on the Board of Directors of the St. Louis Gallery Association and was Exhibitions Consultant for Chesterfield Arts. As an independent curator, she curated the exhibit, “Pausing for Reflection: A Reflection on Pausing,” for Regional Arts Commission (2011). As an artist, her work has been included in several area exhibits. 

 

St. Louis, MO – July 24, 2018 – Artists of all ages and abilities are invited to register for the South Grand Chalk Walk, put on by the South Grand Cultural Alliance every fall. The event takes place Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the Ritz Park on South Grand.

“Chalk Walk is all about celebrating our local talent and inviting everyone to come enjoy everything South Grand Business District has to offer,” said Rachel Witt, Executive Director. “We invite artists of all kinds to showcase their originality through chalk art.”

Up to $650 in cash prizes plus even more gift card prizes will be awarded to the top three pieces of artwork in the age categories of 0-11, 12-17 and 18+ as judged by community art experts. Passers by can vote all day for their favorites and the top three vote getters for Community Favorite will also get prizes. Local groups will perform and a community mural will take shape throughout the day.

This year, organizers are adding a new element to the festival – signature artists. After reviewing a public call for artists, Kelly Burris, Terry Hinkle, Alex Johnmeyer and Ori Tala (aka N’Dea Collins-Whitfield) were selected to be paid artists, creating signature pieces that day at anchor spots throughout the festival. “This is a great chance for local professionals to showcase their art, engage with their neighbors and draw people throughout the festival,” said Justin King, Chalker in Chief on the event planning committee and former grand prize winner. “Stay tuned as we get closer to October, as we’ll be sharing photos of their concepts as they prepare for the event.”

The 4th Annual South Grand Chalk Walk will have four featured artists, paid to create something magical during the festival. We value these local artists and their work, and we’re excited to showcase their talent during the event! Craig Thomas

Craig Thomas is a freelance artist living in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He is known for his fine art, murals and street painting. His artwork has taken him throughout North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. Craig works commercial, public and private commissions.

Ori Tala aka N’Dea Collins-Whitfield 

Ori Tala, is a 20-something Black Indigenous, Twospirit (they/them) identifying native and creative or St. Louis, Missouri. Their artistic talents were developed early in their youth. The pieces they create are intertwined comic style with cubism and are often in subjects surrounded in being cosmic and galactic. Their work highlights the representation and the idea of overcoming struggle and the human experience on main personal and identical perspectives of black and brown peoples in America. They use art as an outlet for self-expression, preservation for folx/ people of color (poc) and the recognition of mental illnesses and issues faced within underprivileged/oppressed communities. They are currently working to establish a children’s art biennale and to improve the lives of LGBTQAI+ folx and children through art, science, technology and entrepreneurship.

Call For Art: Chalk Walk Juried Artists

As we begin to make plans for our 4th Annual South Grand Chalk Walk, we are excited to announce our “Call For Art” invite to new and past Artists to be paid to create eye-catching artwork that will entice visitors to the festival. We are seeking 4 talented Artists to complete a work of art for the Chalk Walk. You will be paid $300, fed and basically treated like the big cheese you are. Your work will be on display along with the competing artists, but not part of the judged competition or community favorite. Your work, name and website will be promoted in advance of, during and after the festival. Patrons can expect all that South Grand has to offer – entertainment, music, and your amazing art.

We are seeking art in all styles. Please submit your proposed design. Please keep in mind size and complexity, we are chalking on side walks and you may have to adjust your design to the space we assign to you.

Artist Agrees to the Following Terms (please read carefully):
This submission is subject to review and approval by Chalk Walk official judges and the Chalk Walk event committee reserves the right to accept or reject any submission. Your proposed artwork must be family-friendly. Everything that is submitted may be used for promotional materials. Artist agrees to have completed artwork by 4 PM the day of the event. It is not mandatory that the artist attends for the entirety of the event from 10 AM-5PM, but it can be beneficial to meet possible leads and press. Artist understands that they may display business cards or small handouts promoting yourself. A bio display will be provided for you.

• File Type: jpeg or pdf
• File Size: at least 300 dpi, at least 10 inches wide or tall

• It must include the following info:
  • Name, address, phone number and email
  • Your bio and social media and/or website urls (these will be used for promotional material and advertising prior to and after the event)

Next Steps
All artists will be notified of the jury’s decision. Artists with approved designs will be issued detailed instructions for the next steps regarding submissions of completed designs and issued event information. Any artists not chosen for this position are eligible to compete in the event through the normal process.
